'Global Identities in Contemporary Society' Exhibition

louiseoliart

In response to ‘Global Identities in Contemporary Society’ I found that this linked and connected strongly to my self-negotiated project: ‘A contemporary community’ through its use of representation to describe the identities around me. In contemporary society, due to globalisation there has been an introduction in transnational, hybrid and new identities that now shape who are part of our society. ‘Global identities’ instantly promote this idea and therefore corresponds with my aim of documenting those around me in ‘contemporary society’ as the same in my self-negotiated project.

I had then decided to use the beginning of my self-negotiated project and its outcomes so far to display in the exhibition in order to find out more about its response in a showcase environment. This way I could experiment with display and presentation of my work and whether this is successful.

To enhance these pieces further I have added an element of fabrics. This is something I explored throughout my previous project and felt it was a very successful element to showcase my portraits in a different way. For this exhibition my outcomes symbolised my viewpoint on globalisation. I aim to argue how globalisation has caused a culture crisis in that the merging of cultures/ethnicities and identities has resulted in a lack of traditional cultural norms and values that distinguish us from one another. The transparent fabrics almost signify the loss of these traditions and therefore are somewhat causing a removal of our identity. The lose hanging position of these also show movement and are therefore reflective of the movement of individuals across borders (migration) which has introduced new identities into contemporary society.
